If you are comparing psychotherapy vs hypnotherapy, the difference can seem unclear.
In simple terms, psychotherapy uses therapeutic conversation and psychological techniques to help you understand thoughts, feelings, behaviours and patterns. Hypnotherapy adds hypnosis, or trance, to therapeutic work, using a relaxed state of focused attention as part of the process.
That does not always mean choosing one or the other.
In the Solution-Focused approach I use, psychotherapy forms an important part of each session, while hypnosis can complement that work. Understanding how each element works can help you decide what kind of support feels right for you.
How Are Psychotherapy And Hypnotherapy Different?
Psychotherapy focuses on therapeutic conversation and psychological techniques.
Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis as part of therapeutic work.
In Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy, the two can work together. Psychotherapy provides the structured conversation, while trance can support relaxation, focus and positive change.
So, if you are wondering whether you need psychotherapy or hypnotherapy, the answer may not always be an either-or choice.
What Is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is a broad term covering different approaches designed to support emotional, behavioural and mental health difficulties.
Not all psychotherapy looks the same.
Some approaches explore previous experiences in depth. Others focus more on current thoughts, behaviours, relationships or goals.
The form I use is Solution-Focused Psychotherapy. Rather than concentrating heavily on why a problem began, we look at:
- What would you like to be different?
- What is already working?
- What would progress look like?
- What small steps could help you move forwards?
This can suit people who want a practical, structured and forward-looking approach.

What Is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy involves using hypnosis within a therapeutic setting.
Clinical hypnosis is very different from stage hypnosis. You are not asleep, unconscious or giving up control.
Trance is simply a relaxed state of focused attention. It can feel similar to becoming absorbed in a book, concentrating deeply on a task or driving a familiar route without consciously noticing every detail.
Within Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy, hypnosis does not replace psychotherapy. It complements it.
The talking part of the session helps us identify progress, useful patterns and desired changes. The trance element then supports relaxation and reinforces the positive therapeutic work.

Psychotherapy vs Hypnotherapy At A Glance
| Psychotherapy | Hypnotherapy | |
| Main focus | Therapeutic conversation and psychological techniques | Therapeutic work using hypnosis |
| Are you conscious? | Yes | Yes |

The most important point is that the therapy label only tells you part of the story.
Your needs, the therapist's approach, their qualifications and whether you feel comfortable working with them all matter.
Do You Have To Talk About The Past In Psychotherapy?
Not necessarily.
One common misconception is that psychotherapy always means revisiting childhood or analysing difficult experiences in detail.
Some approaches do explore the past, but Solution-Focused Psychotherapy is mainly concerned with the present and future.
We can acknowledge what has happened without making it the focus of every session.
If you already understand your problem but still feel stuck, the more useful question may be: what could help things become different?
That is where Solution-Focused work places much of its attention.
Psychotherapy Or Hypnotherapy For Anxiety: Which Is Better?
There is no single answer.
Anxiety affects people in different ways, so the more helpful question is often:
Which therapeutic approach is appropriate for what I am experiencing?
Someone experiencing work-related anxiety may have different needs from someone struggling with a specific phobia.
Within my practice, people commonly seek support for anxiety, stress, overwhelm, confidence, low mood and fears or phobias.
You can explore a wider overview of the conditions I help with.
Do You Need To Choose Between Them?
Not always.
In the Solution-Focused method I practise, psychotherapy and hypnotherapy overlap.
Psychotherapy provides the structured therapeutic conversation. Hypnosis provides the trance and relaxation element used alongside it.
This means you do not necessarily need to arrive at your first appointment already knowing exactly which form of therapy you need.
How Can You Decide Which Approach Feels Right?
A few practical questions can help.
What Do You Want To Change?
Think about what would actually feel different if therapy helped.
Perhaps you would sleep better, worry less about work, feel more confident, manage stress more effectively or stop avoiding something because of fear.
How Do You Want To Work?
Some people want to explore past experiences in detail. Others prefer a more practical and future-focused approach.
If the latter sounds more suitable, you can read more about my Solution-Focused approach.
Do You Feel Comfortable With The Therapist?
When choosing a therapist, it is also worth looking at their qualifications, professional memberships and the standards they work to.
I am a qualified Solution-Focused Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist, holding HPD and DSFH qualifications, with membership of AfSFH and registration with the CNHC. These professional credentials form part of the reassurance that you are working with someone who follows recognised standards of practice.
